3 Tips on How to Picture your Wedding Cake

Congratulations on your engagement and welcome to the wonderful world of wedding cakes! As exciting as all the possibilities are, sometimes I find that couples are a little overwhelmed at the prospect of picking a wedding cake. Personally, I think it’s a gorgeous opportunity to bring out your personality as a couple, to create a cakey personification if you will. That’s why The PixieBox Bakery has no set wedding cake menu; each wedding cake is as individual as the newly married couple themselves! But if this concept fills you with confusion then look no further, pour yourself a cuppa and relax! Here are 3 tips to help you imagine your perfect wedding cake.

What’s your flava?

So we’re going to start from the inside out. Food has a wonderful way of keeping memories alive. When you imagine a favourite food from your past you are transported back in time to a specific place, you can remember the people who were there with you and how you felt when you ate it. Whether it’s your Nanna’s special brown bread, the authentic gelato that you had on holidays in Italy or your Mam’s roast dinner, these memories are intrinsically linked to food.

So when it comes to picking your wedding cake flavours, I would always advise that you choose with two things in mind – firstly that you choose a cake flavour(s) that you both love and enjoy. This way your wedding cake already has a personal twist. Secondly, I would also advise that you think about crowd-pleasers, the last thing you want is to be left with lots of untouched wedding cake, it should be enjoyed by everyone. So it’s a balance between the two.

A few extra things to be aware of: chocolate biscuit cake finger slices are cut smaller than sponge flavours so you will get more slices per cake if you choose a chocolate biscuit cake. The other thing is that some flavours are better suited to different seasons, for example, a zesty lemon cake would probably be more suited to a summer wedding and a rich chocolate fudge cake would be more usual for a winter wedding. That being said never be put off having your favourite as part of your big day!

Pick a theme or colour scheme

A nice and easy way to start the ball rolling on a wedding cake design is to think about a theme or a colour scheme that can be used as a reference for your wedding cake. Maybe you both love the theatre and would love a certain musical integrated into the design. Or perhaps you would like the cake to complement the design of your wedding dress and have a lace effect. The possibilities are endless and can be as flamboyant or subtle as you like. Couples generally have a pretty strong gut reaction to whether they want a themed wedding cake or not to trust your gut.

If that doesn’t sound like you, perhaps picking out a colour scheme may suit you more. This can be a lot less daunting as you have already probably got a colour scheme in mind for the flowers or bridesmaid dresses so this same colour scheme can be extended to include your wedding cake as well.

All the frills

Now comes the finishing touches, all those smaller details that can really elevate your wedding cake to a real showstopper! Here are just a few, but honestly, the list could be endless depending on how simple or extravagant you would like your wedding cake to be. Would you like a cake topper? There are so many options when it comes to cake toppers and they can be a lovely way to add extra height and drama to the top of your wedding cake, while also having a personal touch. You can choose ones with your names intertwined, have a little couple holding hands on the top or even ones shaped like hot air balloons. If you can imagine it, you can probably find a cake topper to match. Would you like a floral flourish on your cake? If you love flowers would you like fresh or, a favourite of The PixieBox Bakery, hand-piped buttercream flowers. If you are choosing fresh flowers just keep in mind that certain flowers just won’t last long enough out of water to look their best for your cake. The likes of Hydrangeas, although beautiful, aren’t hardy enough whereas Roses are great. Would you like to incorporate gold or silver leaf into your design? Completely safe for consumption, food-grade gold or silver leaf can really add that extra glamourous flare to your wedding cake and can be used in many different ways.
